Don’t Be a Karen

When did my name become a pejorative?

I stole this definition of What does being a Karen mean from Quora:

A “Karen” is a term used on Reddit and in Internet slang in general to refer to a specific type of woman. A “Karen” is typically a woman between the ages of 30–60 who likely has children and has the air of a suburban mother. However, what is most distinctive and important to notice about a “Karen” is that she is incredibly entitled, nosy, and belligerent. “Karen” is almost always used as a slur for these kind of women who refuse to treat other people decently

Okay, so when did this happen?

Y’all, can I confess something to you? I’ve never felt my name fit me. Especially now.

Don’t be a Karen. I so wish they’d picked the name Sue. Or Gloria. Or Mabel. Maybe Dorothy? Joyce. Grace. Beverly. Betty.

  1. OK – now you know that in the atmosphere in which we live – there are all sorts of snarky things being said for no reason other than to put it on a social media site and it is supposed to be amusing. “OK Boomer”. Think about it Boomers changed the world and their children have found a way to belittle the entire generation. No, I am not a Boomer, too old, but I find that rather sad.

To me, Karen is a blond Scandinavian girl who looks like she could ski downhill very fast and for a very long time. I believe we live in a period when being able to denigrate someone else is the only way for many to make themselves feel better about themselves.

    • I just roll my eyes at certain stuff, Annette. I had my head down, working, when the Karen stuff started. Couple that with Ok, Boomer and I’m ready to rebel. 🙂

  2. My Great Aunt spent 20 minutes telling a waitress how she wanted her omelet made and then, much to her sisters embarrassments, followed her back into the kitchen to explain it to the cook. The meme should be “Don’t be an Iva” LOL 😉
