I followed a link this morning and was reading an article. It stopped, I’m presuming, mid-way and a large box appeared. “This Content is Locked! Please share using the button in the box below to unlock the content.”
You know that I’m a Southern Belle, right? And that I would normally just bat my big brown eyes at you, right? For some reason, this little Southern Texan was prompted to utter two words, one of them was, “you”. The other one wasn’t.
Popup boxes irritate me no end when I visit other websites (especially the ones that appear before you can read anything). This, however, was even more annoying than a popup. Share? I had to share your stuff before I could read it?
Nope, don’t think so.
Let’s not even consider the fact that I no longer have a Twitter or Facebook account.
I went bye-bye and I won’t be back.
This little gambit is right up there with over advertising your site. (I’ve had to discontinue reading one blog because they have so many ads on it that I can no longer navigate – and I have ad blockers installed. Great, I understand how you might want to monetize your blog – it’s not cheap maintaining a website if you’re doing it right – but I think some blogs are just going overboard. Maybe, just maybe, they’re gaining some ad revenue, but I can’t help but wonder if they’re also losing readers.)
How about you? What would you do if you got the above message? How do you feel about popups? Do ads bother you?
