Today marks the start of Fiesta here in San Antonio. I couldn’t begin to give the ten day long celebration justice so I’ll just link here to the official site.
I’m not involved in Fiesta anymore. Once upon a time, I was. Think Fiesta River Parade, 17,000 tickets, and me being one of the little mice expected to make sure the big cheese were happy. (I have a few embarrassing event stories about Fiesta, but for now I’m keeping them under wraps.)
We do the whole coronation thing with court and queens. The dresses are to die for. You don’t get the full effect until the trains are displayed on the floats. Awesome, really awesome.
Most of the Fiesta events benefit charity in one way or another. There’s one called El Rey Fido, in which they choose a dog king (and which benefits the Humane Society);
Once upon a time, we used to collect coins, things that King Antonio or El Rey Feo passed out. Nowadays, it’s medals. Just look at a few of them: (There are oodles more, here.)
