I had a conversation with an older gentleman the other day. He espoused the theory that he’d “just about seen it all.” I’ve always been raised (I know the proper term is reared, but it doesn’t sound right to me) to respect my elders, so I didn’t argue with him.
Frankly, I don’t understand how someone can think they’ve seen all life has to offer. Every time I turn around, I run into something new and interesting. The other day I was ordering veggies from the place that supplies me from farms in the area when I stumbled onto a picture of a watermelon radish. In all MY days, I’d never seen one or even heard about them.
Here’s a picture: (The ones I have are greener, with a beautiful sunburst center.)
They’re about the size of an orange, green on the outside, but when you slice them, they look like a watermelon. They have a very, very faint taste of radish, almost sweet.
I’ve started slicing them very thin and using them almost like crackers, since I don’t eat grains. They’re also great in a salad.
