I just read the most uplifting, down to earth, inspiring blog post by a woman. It was all about giving rude or inconsiderate people the benefit of the doubt. For example, we don’t know if the guy who cut us off in traffic just learned his father died. Or the woman who was rude on the phone just hung up from a call with her doctor giving her bad news. We only see a small part of a person’s life.
Then, I read her bio.
She’s a medium who passes on advice she gets from her spirit guides.
The lead door shut in my mind. I immediately erased every warm fuzzy feeling I’d gotten reading her blog post. I could see my hand waving in the air in circles.
Then I wondered if I was doing the same thing – seeing only part of the person.
The more I thought about it, the more I wondered if the source of the advice really matters, as long as it’s good advice.
I’m not about to criticize people who believe in mediums who have spirit guides. I don’t know everything. But I am so focused on the reality of life – and I find that pretty amazing – that it’s difficult for me to accept spirit guides. However, the act of writing is magical to me, so maybe I should.
But here’s my question: does the authenticity of the person who gives advice matter to you? Do you only accept advice from people you respect? Or does it matter where it comes from?
