I personally believe it’s okay to fail. It’s the rare person who achieves success (or perfection) without failing a few times. What’s important is not how many times you fall but how many times you get up.
Let me tell you – being a writer is an exercise in failure.
- The chapter doesn’t work.
- The hero doesn’t work.
- The damn plot doesn’t work.
- The ending doesn’t work. For that matter, the beginning doesn’t work.
You’ve got a choice at this point. You can walk away from your effort and tell yourself you don’t mind giving it up. Or you can make it up to your knees, brush yourself off, sit down in the chair and get back to work.
I’ve seen more people do the former than the latter.
Nobody ever succeeds without failing. I believe that completely. But never give up. Failure isn’t a destination; it’s just a rest stop.
