I cracked up the other day reading a post on a forum. The woman, who was the mother of five, stated that she was really bored, lately, reading sex scenes in romances. She knew how it worked, she said. The five children just didn’t appear in the cabbage patch one day.

Then, in the way of coincidences, I witnessed a written discussion among a few authors. The subject was writing sex scenes. One writer confessed that she kept a list of her books and the included sex scenes in order to vary the sex that way. If one book featured oral sex, the next didn’t. Another author stated that she used the same sex scene over and over, just changed the names.

Frankly, I was a little shocked. Of course the mother of five is bored reading the same thing over and over.

I believe that the characters ought to dictate the level of intimacy and the expression of it.

After the Kiss was a very sensual book because the heroine was fascinated with these erotic books in her possession. She wanted to experience what she saw illustrated. But would that same level of sensuality have worked in another book? Not really. In My Beloved, the characters couldn’t touch for most of the book. In A Scotsman in Love, the hero had to overcome his deep grief for his wife. At first, his intimacy with the heroine was more a physical release. Only later did it become an emotional need.

I don’t care for mechanical sex scenes where there’s lots of heavy breathing and loads o’fluids. But engage my mind and my emotions, and I’m yours, baby.

So, are you bored with sex scenes?
