Pretty Men vs Male Men

I was thinking about heroes the other day.

heart3jpgI happened to see a movie trailer featuring Tom Cruise. Um, I hope not to insult any Cruise fans out there, but I’m not interested in picturing Tom Cruise as a romantic hero. I couldn’t, for the life of me, tolerate him in Top Gun. You see, I’ve dated Navy flyers, and all of them were TALL and mostly gorgeous.

I immediately thought of Leonardo DiCaprio. I’m not one of his fans, either. I never saw Titanic because of him. I did see the last scene where he died and I, um, kind of rooted for it to hurry up and happen.

Hanging my head in shame here.

DiCaprio and Cruise have the same type of physicality. They’re both short, pretty, and almost delicate (to me). They’re not my idea of heroes.

However, Craig T. Nelson in Call to Glory? Be still my thundering heart.

Tall, broad shouldered, a man’s man. (And a woman’s man, ahem.)

Then, I immediately segued to Tom Selleck. Same type of physique. Same rugged looks. Not pretty as much as arresting.

I’ve never been a fan of mustaches but I never even NOTICED it on Selleck’s face.

So, those two guys are hero types for me. What about you? Are you a Cruise or DiCaprio fan or do you prefer another type?

I happened on to this poll on Woot.com the other day. The majority of women wouldn’t meet up with a stranger for a night of passion. 22.4% of the guys wouldn’t, either. But the majority of men would. As I studied this poll, I couldn’t help but wonder – what are men thinking?

  • “I’ll never get a sexually transmitted disease. No sirree, not me.”
  • “Nobody will ever know. Not my wife/girl friend/boy friend/ etc.”
  • “No money will change hands. The woman only wants me because I’m funny/charming/Mr. Personality.”
  • “I’ll be safe as in my own bed. How many female serial killers are there, anyway?”
  • “It’s only one night. What’s the fuss?”
  • She’s really a girl. No, really. She’s not a guy dressed as a girl. Honest.”

So, what would you do?

Would you meet up with a stranger from the ‘net?

I think the era of free love has passed, even though the age of “hookups” seems to be with us. Different label, same behavior. Anonymous sex, with few thoughts to the future.

Consider me a fuddy duddy, if you will, but the excitement of anonymous sex (if excitement is the right word) would be easily overshadowed by the fears of STDs and people who aren’t mentally stable. Me? I would be one of the women who clicked on “I’m a gal and no way!”

Here’s what I want – a background check, proof that he isn’t a stalker or married, and the most important component – that I know the person.
